During our last show on the ship, the seas were a bit rough and coming out of one of our turns both Paul and I were slightly off in where we were supposed to be. His face connected with my arm and the beautiful big bangles I love to wear, all covered in Swarovski diamantes, sharp as little razors, connected with his big jubie lip! I knew I had hit him but for some strange reason, he had no concept of it. As we came out of the next turn, I noticed the bright red stream gushing from his lip. At first it ran across his lip and looked like a nice coat of lip gloss. Out the next turn the stream of blood flicked off his lip and onto his bright white costume in the subtle arrangement of a cute splaattt on his shoulder.
"Gluddd" I said, pushing the word awkwardly out of my forced smile, trying not to let the audience hear me. Paul looked at me strangely and kept dancing, more blood streamed onto his white costume and then I heard the people talking in the audience. Yep, they could see it and Paul still couldnt. Suddenly he licked his lip and had the taste in his mouth, he flashed me a look and next thing the song had finished and we were in our final position with smiles in place.
Backstage the little holes in his lip were frozen with ice, they finally stopped bleeding and a nice big lump replaced the lip Paul had before the show. What fascinates me is how he didnt even feel it, let alone know he was bleeding. I love how a consummate performer like Paul could go out there, blood gushing from a wound and he would keep dancing, smiling, working the room, completely unaware.
Now Paul has these dotted little marks on his lip, a reminder how close he came to a black eye, broken nose or other mashed parts of his face, all the risks you take when dancing on a moving dance floor!
This blog is a personal account of the journey of Paul Zaidman and Cheryl Smith dating back to March 2005 when we first were recruited to sail onboard the QE2 as dancers, performers and teachers.
What started as a 4 month contract turned into almost two years as we progressed to the number 1 cruiseline, Crystal Cruises. This blog was updated regularly with photos and stories.
The latest updates are from the most recent cruises in January 2010
