Rio De Janiero Brazil
March 12, 2006
After sailing for six days, the ship started going a little stir crazy, we couldnt wait to get off at 6pm last night when we docked in the heart of Rio.
Scheduled to escort over 300 Crystal guests to the local Samba Show, Paul and I headed off to the "Platforma Show". The show was great, lots of gorgeous Brazilians, semi naked and shaking their thing. Dancing was quite average with lots of stilted twirls and some basic show dancing... but.... the Capioera Guys were amazing!!! They jumped, somersaulted, backflipped and pulled fantastic acrobatic feats all to the sound of the heavy Brazilian drum beat.
The host of the evening started welcoming people from all different countries, after a little while he then played the national anthem for Korea and pulled an audience member up to sing his countries song. Well, when he started singing HAVA NAGILA, Israels most famous song, even if he was tied down you couldnt have stopped Paul racing onto the stage to sing his little heart out. The audience roared and the many Jewish guests on board the Symphony have been congratulating him today, they really appreciated his patriotism.
As the show drew to conclusion the dancers made their way into the audience selecting a few to come and dance with them. I was hiding behind my camera but this tall handsome Brazilian man saw through my disguise and dragged me up. I was thinking... oh no... not me... but at the same time I remembered my words to the guests in the bus there.... "if you get a chance to dance tonight, dont be shy, you might not be in Rio again" So... I had to oblige.... I couldnt let all those guests down now could I :-)
Today we made our way into the centre of Rio, a busy city with a feeling of dangerous and exciting energy. I had been plotting and scheming to achieve one of my personal goals and I dragged Paul into this old shop owned by four generations of Brazilians.... little did he know I would walk out two hours later with my own, authentic, made in Brazil, genuine, skimpy, tiny, Brazilian Samba Costume!!! complete with matching gold platform shoes and purple body glitter !!! ARGHHH!!! I could hardly contain my excitement.
Botafogo Beach After the excitement had dissipated we made our way out to the beaches for some sightseeing. First we visited Botafogo Beach... in the world of dance, this beach has a significant name as Botafogo is a traditional step in Samba that means to ignite the feet!!
Copacobana and Ipanema Beach We made our way to Copacobana Beach and onto Ipanema; both beautiful, big sweeping beaches with a fabulous tiled walkways running the entire length. The beaches are populated with volley ball players, sunbathers, walkers, runners and people just hanging out. It was the strangest feeling, but the shape and length of the beach, the calmness of the water... it felt very much like my home town Melbourne... on sterioids
