salsa performance cluster

Ok, here are the top 20 questions asked about taking on dance lessons!

Dont be shy, we've heard it all before and what's even better is we have a remedy for all the issues you've had with other dance studios, terrifying teachers and all those bad experiences you've had!

If the answer you're looking for isn't here, email us at info@dance101.com.au or call us on 0417 700 767

Click here if you want to head straight to our CLASS TIMES page or check out our PHOTOS, YOUTUBE clips and BLOG, we've got stacks of stuff on this website!

How much do the classes cost?

At DANCE101 we work on the concept of $15 per hour per person for all our Salsa and Latin Dance Classes.  If you do two classes in one night, we discount the second class and it becomes $25 for the two.

Ladies Programs are 90 minute sessions – these classes are $22 per person, per session.

Do I have to book?

You don’t have to book any of our classes (unless it’s a special course or program) All classes are casual, you just turn up on the night, pay for that class and away you go!

Do I need a partner?
No! You don’t need a partner, our teachers will rotate partners during the dance class, so when you get tired of dancing with one, you quickly get another!

Can I start anytime?

Yes, you can start anytime.  Ladies Programs run over a school term (9 weeks) but you can attend casually at any point.  We’d rather you dancing than not!  Some of our Latin classes (ie, St Kilda & Dandenong) it might be best to wait until a new cycle starts.  We publish each new cycle on our news page

What about if I'm really unco-ordinated?

Ah... you need to go straight to our Beginner 1 class, we take you right from your very first steps and we assume you know absolutely nothing!  You can stay in that class as long as you like, we wont rush you!  When you're ready, you move onto the Beginner 2 class and same deal there, hang out as long as you like.

Our teachers are all trained to handle the MOST UNCO-ORDINATED, the most CHALLENGED and all those people that just can't seem to get it together with their partner (on the dancefloor).  We've got all the tricks of the trade, most of them you never see coming but we are masters at what we do and you WILL GET IT!

What do I wear?
For your feet, ladies wear something that’s comfortable and wont slip off your foot when you turn. Don’t wear your newest, biggest heels that you can hardly walk in, they wont work at all!

For the guys, Make sure you wear whatever is comfortable for you, usually guys wear pants and a shirt to the evening classes.  Please avoid wearing thongs as these make dancing very difficult and please, please please don’t wear steel capped shoes!

For more info on what to wear, click here

What time are the classes?
Generally we have an Intermediate class at the earlier timeslot of 7pm or 7.30pm.  We then have a Beginner class at 8pm or 8.30pm. Latin classes are usually run at the earlier timeslot of 6pm or 6.30pm (except Newport Substation).

For a full timetable of all our classes, visit our CLASS TIMES page on our website

Where can I practice?

At all of our venues we clear the floor after the last class (9pm or 9.30pm) and its your time to practice with whoever you want to!  We play the music so you can dance and usually our teachers hang out too, so you can ask them questions and get to know everyone! This is completely free and you don’t need to be a student to enjoy this part of all our nights!

What if I bring my own partner?

We wont force you to change partners if you don’t want too! Yikes, that’s horrible!  If you BYO partner and you want to dance with them, that’s cool, we get it!  Just let the teacher know that you wont be swapping.  (Beware! You might want to rethink that when you have your first “dance argument”!)

Do you teach a different move every week?
DANCE101 has a complete Salsa, Latin & Ladies Program Syllabus.  Our classes will progress you through a series of moves and varying degrees of technique.  You can start anytime but there is a direction we head you in, these aren’t disposable moves that we teach you one week and you never see again.  We work with them, refine them, put them into combinations, mix them up etc.

Our syllabus has been crafted with fun, care and over 20 years of teaching experience, it rocks!

Do I have to pay in bulk?
You don’t need to pay in advance or in bulk, you just pay as you go!  The Ladies Program is the only place where we offer a discount for bulk purchases and that’s an online rate only.

How many people in a class?

We keep our venues and classes to a certain size, if they get too big, you don’t get the benefit. Our classes are approximately 12-30 people.  We often split our class into two groups, the easier level and the harder level, its still the same class but its better for your learning.

Do you teach other styles?

We teach all styles of partner dancing: Salsa, Latin, Ballroom, Argentine Tango, Swing.  You can learn any of these dances in private lessons or special workshops.  Our group classes tend to be Salsa & Latin (unless specified)

Do you teach kids?
Yes, sometimes we do!  We actually have a new TEENS and TWEENS program about to be launched. The best thing is to keep an eye on our NEWS page or SUBSCRIBE to our e-newsletter and get all the latest news.

What is the average age of the people?

This is a great question and we like to answer it this way – it’s not the age of the people that’s important, it’s the intention.  At DANCE101 we have been experiencing a phenomenon right from our 1st week of lessons – we attract really lovely people who want to dance, have fun and socialize.  It’s not a sleazy pickup joint masquerading as a dance class!  It’s also not a boring dance class where the teachers are so up-themselves it makes you want to puke!

Sorry, did I get carried away there? We are passionate about dancing being fun and for all ages. When you dance for fun, age is irrelevant!

What level will I be?

DANCE101 has four main levels for Salsa: Beginner 1 & 2, Intermediate 1 & 2.

We have several levels for Latin as well: Beginner, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Gold Star, Premier Star, and Oscar.

Can I sit and watch the class?

Yes, absolutely you can watch the Salsa and Latin classes, no worries at all.  We wont hassle you or try to pull you into the class.  In the Ladies Programs, that’s another story, our policy is “No Men, No Mirrors, No Visitors and No Spectators” If you’re in the room, you’re dancing. So sorry, we can’t let you watch the Ladies Programs

Is the 1st Lesson FREE?

Sorry, we don’t’ offer that in any of our classes at DANCE101 but we do give a full 12 weeks of FREE Lessons at our Latin Dancing @ Melbourne Docklands

Do you have other events / parties on in Melbourne?
Absolutely!  DANCE101 is famous for throwing great parties and events!  We have a regular monthly event called FRIDAY SALSA FIX and we do these amazing themed events such as Christmas in July, Annual Salsa Ball, Halloween etc.  Anyone is welcome and we always kick off the night with a dance class so new people don’t get left behind.  Check out our EVENTS page on a regular basis
